MISD - DRIVING WHILE LICENSE CANCELED, SUSPENDED OR REVOKED; MISD - FLEEING AN OFFICER ON FOOT; FELONY - BATTERY – 2ND DEGREE / INJURY POLICE, FIRE CODE ENFORCE, CORRECTIONAL IN LINE OF DUTY
Dumas Police Department Sgt. Greg Freeman conducted a traffic stop Saturday, February 11, 2023 at approximately 7:26 pm, on a bronze Buick Park Avenue for a defective license plate light.
The vehicle stopped at the intersection of West Waterman and South Cherry.
When Sgt. Freeman made contact with the driver, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Freeman advised the driver, Jasus Dewon Robinson, why he stopped him.
Robinson exited his vehicle and observed the plate light being out.
Sgt. Freeman asked Robinson for his drivers license and he stated that he didn't have one that he had an ID and he didn't have it with him.
While speaking with him Sgt. Freeman observed that he had what appeared to be a piece of clear plastic in the right side inside his mouth. Sgt. Freeman asked Robinson to spit it out and he refused and began walking away. Sgt. Freeman asked Robinson several more times to spit it out and he refused.
When Sgt. Freeman got close to Robinson, Robinson shoved Sgt. Freeman backwards and grabbed him by his hand. When Sgt. Freeman pushed Robinson, the Sargent dislocated his right thumb. Sgt. Freeman immediately popped it back into place.
Robinson ran south on Cherry and Sgt. Freeman lost sight of him due to darkness.
Officer Kristy Freeman gave chase but could not locate Robinson.
The vehicle was towed by Whaley's Tow Service to Whaley's Tow Service yard.
FELONY - UNLAWFUL DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM FROM A VEHICLE; FELONY - UNAUTHORIZED USE OF ANOTHER PERSON PROPERTY TO FACILITATE A CERTAIN CRIMES; FELONY - AGGRAVATED ASSAULT
Dumas Police Department Sgt. Crystal Martin was dispatched to the Glen Cove Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at approximately 10:18 pm in reference of a shooting.
Upon arrival, Chief Finch and Sgt. Martin med contact with the apartment manager Cortez. Mr, Cortez stated he was in his office and heard a bunch of gunshots but did not know a specific area.
As Chief Finch and Sgt. Martin were talking with Mr. Cortez, Firefighter Kenneth Daniels stated there were multiple shell casings at the intersection of Melrose and Mistletoe Street.
Chief Finch and Sgt. Martin secured the scene. CID Armstrong was notified.
Sgt. Martin spoke with Tashekia Marks at the scene. She stated they just got back from picking up pizza from Pizza Hut because they were setting up for a birthday party. She stated that Felicia's son pulled up and started shooting at them in the yard. One of those in the yard stated a witness saw and can identify him because he rolled the window down and stated “I don't care who I kill” then began shooting.
Kenneth Daniels stated one of the victims called him and told him it was a white SUV and gave the license plate number of who shot at them.
CID Armstrong and CID Hernandez arrived on scene. CID Hernandez processed the scene.
Officers identified Felicia's son as Khalid Benton from a prior incident and Mr. Benton had an active Felony Warrant.
During patrolling, Chief Finch located the vehicle that was described by witnesses at the scene at 213 Pecan St. Officers from the Dumas Police Department along with Desha County Sheriff's Office arrived as backup.
Mr. Benton came out of the house with his hands up and surrendered. Mr. Benton was taken into custody for his Felony Warrant of Battery 1st Degree.
The shooting incident has been turned over to CID.
FELONY – BATTERY – 2ND DEGREE / INJURY POLICE, FIRE, CODE ENFORCEMENT, CORRECTIONAL IN LINE OF DUTY; MISD – ANIMAL CRUELTY; MISD – PUBLIC INTOXICATION / DRINKING IN PUBLIC
Dumas Police Department Sgt. Crystal Martin and CID Alan Hernandez were dispatched to the intersection of East Choctaw and Patrick Drive Sunday February 5, 2023 at approximately 10:25 am, regarding a female jumping into traffic.
Upon our arrival the officers observed an African American female walking west on East Choctaw. As CID Hernandez made contact with her and noticed that she appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Hernandez asked the female for identification, but she did not cooperate. A male subject approached Sgt. Martin identified as Devon Tugman. Tugman stated that the female was Kenchasha Williams.
Williams was ran through ACIC and local warrants. Dispatch advised that Williams had an outstanding warrant for Dumas.
Ms. Williams advised she wanted to be seen by EMS because she took some pills that did not belong to her and she wanted to kill herself.
While waiting for EMS to arrive, Ms Williams grabbed a dog and put the dog in a choke hold. Sgt. Martin and CID Hernandez at that time began to try and free the dog so they could arrest Williams for the charges of animal cruelty and public intoxication.
Williams refused to let the dog go despite the officers efforts. CID Hernandez used his taser to drive-stun Williams. The drive-stun was produced positive results evident by Williams releasing her hold of the dog.
EMS arrived on the scene and Williams was evaluated and it was decided she would be transferred to the hospital for treatment. While Williams was in the ambulance she began kicking Paramedic Darrell Patton and EMT David Carter. Paramedic Patton was able to restrain Williams so she could be transported to the hospital.
At the hospital, Williams was screened and seen by medical staff. While doing this Williams kicked CID Hernandez in the face. Hernandez then approached her right side and attempted to keep her down. She began to fight and resist, during the struggle Hernandez right thumb was dislocated.
Hernandez was instructed to check in the emergency room.
The hospital staff advised they could not commit Williams because she had tested positive for illicit substances and Covid.
Hernandez was unable to find a bed space for Williams due to her having Covid.
She was returned to Devon Tugman, her boyfriend, who advised he could provide the necessary care she needed.
