To those who have an interest in Dark Corner Cemetery:
We of the Dark Corner Cemetery Association would like to take this opportunity to give the public a brief history of the cemetery and an update of the things that are currently in progress.
The Dark Corner Cemetery is located in Lincoln County approximately five miles southwest of Gould, Arkansas. The cemetery has been serving families of this area since the 1800s. As with most of the cemeteries of that time, there was no organized lay-out of the graves in the beginning. Families randomly buried their loved ones wherever they chose. Over the years, the locals in the community began to put some reasonable order to the selection of burial spaces. In 1978, some of the leaders of the community and surrounding area came together to incorporate and form the Dark Corner Cemetery Association. At that time, a surveyor was hired to map and define burial plots with markers being placed in the ground. Two sets of maps and records have been kept in separate locations for security purposes.
In time past, maintenance and upkeep were largely done by volunteers and families. After the Association was formed, plots were sold and donations received as a way to maintain the grounds of the cemetery. Many of the services that were once done by volunteers, such as keeping the cemetery mowed, have been hired out to professionals.
This year the Association agreed to purchase software that would enable the Association to permanently and securely keep records accessible on computer. Many more features and options are available that will increase the efficiency of the services provided. This came at a considerable expense and reduced the general maintenance funds to the point that we are asking for assistance from the people who have an interest in Dark Corner Cemetery. We strive to keep the grounds in good condition. We feel this is important in order to honor the memory of those who are buried there.
So that we may continue to maintain the cemetery to the level that the families expect and deserve, we are asking for your help. Please consider making a donation to the Dark Corner Cemetery Association, which is a non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. Please feel free to make the donation in honor of or in memory of a loved one and that will be noted in the records. A receipt will be sent if requested and an address is provided. All donations, whether large or small, are appreciated.
Please help in this worthy endeavor. The memory of those who came before us should be adequately honored and preserved.
Thank you.
