Dumas experienced a tragic incident on March 19, 2022, that has never been witnessed in our community before. The yearly event is sponsored by a group that is committed to non-violence and whose purpose is “to rebuild, reunite, and respond to the needs of the youth in our communities.” Unfortunately, there were people who attended who did not adhere to these high standards, and as a result one person lost his life and over twenty others were injured.
I and other city leaders are working hard to provide the assistance needed for our citizens in the aftermath of this tragedy. We are coordinating with individuals and groups who provide such services as counseling and other needs to those who have been affected.
Considering all the coping and helpful efforts that are ongoing, I ask that individuals and entities that wish to plan any events within the city of Dumas to bring them to the attention of the mayor. The idea is to make sure events sponsored by individuals or local entities do not run contrary to the services that are being coordinated by the city after the shooting incident. To be most effective, the mayor's office should be made aware of all events and services.
Dumas is a strong community. Our people are resilient, and I am confident that we will come out of this stronger than before. If you need services or have an idea on how we can best provide services, please contact me or one of the other city officials, and we will be glad to sit down and visit.
Please pray for all those who were affected by this tragedy. Please pray for our community. With the help of God and committed citizens, we will come out of this stronger than before…Dumas Strong!
Mayor Flora Simon
