LITTLE ROCK – The 2022 Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) Arkansas Highway Map is now available.
Since 1916, the Highway Map of Arkansas has been available free of charge to all. As with every new Arkansas highway map, the 2022 edition features various updates including new widened highway sections, newly designated commemorative routes, and re-aligned highways.
This year, there were approximately 65 changes made to the map to update it for 2022.
The map also pinpoints the location of every Arkansas State Park. A chart on the reverse side lists public recreation areas and historic memorials.
The 2022 map features the Desha County Courthouse on the cover. The courthouse, located in Arkansas City, is a two-and-a-half-story brick structure built in 1900 in the Romanesque Revival architectural style. The building required 40 train cars of Delta-made brick to complete.
“There is a tradition at ARDOT that allows the Highway Commission Chair to have influence on what area of the state is featured on the new highway map cover,” explained Arkansas Highway Commission Chairman Robert S. Moore Jr. “The Desha County Courthouse in Arkansas City immediately came to my mind. As a child, my family lived just a block down the street and I was in and out of the courthouse growing up because my Dad served as Desha County Sheriff. The citizens of Desha County have done an excellent job of preserving the building. A great deal of the history of the area has come from within its walls. I hope this new map will be a proud reminder to the citizens of Desha County of the rich history we share.”
Little Rock architect Rome Harding designed the courthouse, which also features a four-story clock tower at the southwestern corner, round arches, and decorative patterns worked in brick. The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
“We in Desha County are so honored to have our courthouse featured on the 2022 Arkansas highway map,” said Desha County Judge Richard Tindall. “There are many sights to see in this area of southeast Arkansas including the Delta Heritage Trail. The trail began as a Rails-to-Trails conversion of a Missouri Pacific Railway line. Today, cyclists from across this region of the country are coming to southeast Arkansas to enjoy the 45 miles of trail that are completed. Within a few years, we will have finished all 84 miles extending from Lexa down to Arkansas City. We hope motorists will use the new highway map and plan a trip to Desha County and the surrounding area.”
ARDOT printed 300,000 maps this year.
Maps are available at the ARDOT Central Office in Little Rock, the 10 ARDOT District Offices around the state, and all Arkansas Welcome Centers.
