The Dumas City Council voted to approve an amendment to the Ordinance 973 allowing Dumas High School to discharge fireworks to celebrate a touchdown at the August 9 City Council meeting.. The Ordinance 973 is an ordinance to amend the sale, use and regulation of fireworks in the city of Dumas.
The Street Mentors of Dumas presented a proposal to the Dumas City Council to request assistance with a building to operate their program and funding for the location.
Tironeka Brown, treasurer/secretary; Marquetta Canada, administrator; and Marcus Livingston, financial advisor, asked the city for a building to utilize to house their mentees. They made this request so that the future of SMOD can thrive and the community children will have a safe space to come to. They also asked for funding to help support them continue their work in the community.
They do not currently have a permanent location at this time. Mayor Flora Simon said for the city to consider the request, they would need to provide a written proposal explaining what the organization’s programs will provide for the community.
The Street Mentors of Dumas is a non-profit organization whose mission is to implement programs that will restore hope and provide opportunities for children who need mentors and guidance. They provide career training like skill development and employee development and leadership training like anger and behavior management, self awareness and engagement and motivation.
