The City of Dumas Community and Economic Development Committee met with over a dozen people from Dumas Civic organizations and members of the community met to discuss the 120th Anniversary, January 22, 2024.
They talked about the yearly activities for each civic group and if they have any plans for the $120th Anniversary for the incorporation of Dumas. They discussed two dates for the celebration. There are currently two conflicting documents stating a different dates with one in April and other in November
The discussion continued with how groups could incorporate the event into some of their functions or recognizing the event.
“Then we talked about what we could come together as and do joint groups. We are working on some of that over the next two or three weeks, trying putting that together some ideas to maybe do a community wide celebration of the community-wide celebration of the history and the future of Dumas,” Linda Weatherford said.
The groups shared several ideas. Weatherford will be meeting with some of the people who shared their ideas and how they expand on the ideas and how they can be organized. There is a group who is working on the history of Dumas. There are also plans to incorporate technology, locations around town and come together in a day of activities.
The anniversary will be planned through a sub committee through the Community Development Committee and will include those who want to help plan or contribute their ideas.
The goal of the meeting was to encourage communication between the groups and learn about each other's organization and activities; their plans throughout the year; and how they could support each other. Some groups spoke about coming together to do activities together and supporting activities and events to celebrate the 120th celebration.
“This is the third time we have got the civic groups together in the last couple of years. It seems to have helped groups understand what other groups are doing and how it garners some support for their efforts,” Weatherford said.
