The Youth Improve-ment Club held their second fundraiser to raise money for playground equipment at the Esaw Pickett Park Saturday, June 16, 2022.
The Ruffneck Resistance, a motorcycle riders group , hosted the fundraiser that raised approximately $2,500 raised with donations from the group, the Arkansas Citizens for Climate Change League, of Fort Smith; community donations and drawings. The riders also provided hot dogs, chips and drinks for the event.
Onie Norman said they are getting closer to their goal of purchasing the first two pieces of playground equipment. Norman, Patricia Collins, Mitch Grant and Valerie Donaldson spoke at the event.
Over 20 motorcycle riders started their ride in McGehee riding around the levee finishing at the Park. Commander Steven Dodson, of Monticello, said the riders come from all over the state with members and charters in Arkansas and around the United States. The Ruffneck Resistances volunteer, fundraiser and donate to several programs around the state. They will be raising money for a park in Watson, AR next.
Dodson described it as a place for children to unwind after school and play when school is out for summer or spring break. Executive Officer Ed Flanigan, of Edgemont, said bikes pay to participate in the ride.
“We chose to support this cause to give back to the community and the kids. You look around and there is no playground equipment to play on. That is why we are support this, to give back to the kids ,” Dodson said.
Dodson said for people who want to participate in a Ruffneck Resistance fundraising ride they do not need a bike. They can ride in their personal vehicle or come to the location of the fundraiser to give to the community. For more information go to www.ruffneckressitancermm.com.
The Youth Improvement Club is a non-profit organization that purchased the 5 acre parcel of land in 1969 for a community park and recreation area for the underserved community. The park hosted a variety of summer, community and outdoor activities. The park currently features 6 concrete tables. In addition to playground equipment, the Youth Improvement Organization plans on having ball fields and a walking trail on the property.
