The Dumas Ladycats took on Rison in the 8-3A District tournament semi-finals, defeating the Lady Wildcats 58-52 Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Dumas High School.
Head Girls Basketball Coach Glory Slater's starters included: #30 Mirica Scott, #2 La'Paysha Croom, # 14 Mia Dixon, #4 Aneesa Hill and #12 Ma'Dyson McKinzie.
The Ladycats got off to a fast start, outscoring the Lady Wildcats 17-6 in the first period with balanced scoring from Dixon, Croom, Scott, freshman Ziyaun McKinzie and M. McKinzie
Rison scored just six points during the first period, highlighted by a technical foul on their head coach.
The Lady Wildcat responded by out scoring Dumas 23-11 in the second period to take a 29-28 lead at the half.
The third period belonged to Ladycat freshman Ziyaun McKinzie who scored three tough baskets in a row, in the paint and made one of two free-throw attempts.
The score starting the fourth period was Dumas 39, Rison 39.
In the fourth period, Scott scored on a lay-up followed by a baskets in the paint by M. McKinzie and Z. McKinzie to force a Rison timeout with Rison up 46-45 with 5:22 left to play.
Freshman point guard #23 Alana Rounds made a basket to put Dumas up 47-46 before Coach Slater called a Dumas timeout with 3:38 to go.
After the timeout, the Ladycats scored eight straight points led by Z. McKinzie dominating scoring on a pair of bank-shots and in the paint and making two of two free-throw attempts. Dumas took another timeout with the Ladycats up 53-46 with 2:12 to play.
Rison was forced to foul in the attempt to lengthen the game. Scott made three of six attempts down the stretch to seal the Ladycat 58-53 victory and trip to the 8-3A District Tournament Finals to take on top seed Drew Central.
Z. McKinzie led the Ladycats with 22 points, while M. McKinzie scored 10.
Scott added eight points, while Hill and Croom each scored six points. Rounds chipped in with four points and freshman #3 Stephana Steen scored two points.
The Ladycats shot 57% from the free-throw line, making 12 of 21 attempts.
