GLENWOOD, Ark, (AP) — A southwest Arkansas mayor has been charged with felony theft and abuse of office, according to state Attorney General Leslie Rutledge.
Glenwood Mayor Billy T. Smith of Glenwood used about $4,000 in leftover asphalt millings from a highway resurfacing project to resurface his and his son-in-law’s private driveways, Rutledge said in a statement.
Glenwood is southwest of Hot Springs and about 75 miles (121 kilometers) southwest of Little Rock.
Smith surrendered Friday to state authorities at the Pike County jail on felony charges of theft of property and abuse of office, according to Rutledge.
Jail records do not list an attorney who could speak on Smith's behalf and a phone call to his office rang unanswered on Saturday.
