Dumas Police Officer Wayna Green was dispatched to a call of a man with a gunshot wound at 310 S. Ash Thursday, January 13, 2022. according to Dumas Police Department Incident reports.
Upon arrival, Officer Green observed Mr. Jason Jenkins unconscious in the passenger seat of a white Tahoe with no visible gunshot wound, but with blood stained pants.
Dumas Police Department Sgt. Greg Freeman advised Officer Jenkins and CID Alan Hernandez that the suspect was located inside the apartment.
Sgt. Freeman had been dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:55 PM. When he arrived on scene Sgt. Freeman made contact with Robert Washington who advised that Jason Jenkins was shot and needed an ambulance. Sgt. Freeman advised dispatch to page an ambulance to the location.
Sgt. Freeman asked Washington where the incident took place. Washington stated “right here and he is in the house” pointing at 315 South Ash.
Sgt. Freeman knocked on the door while CID Hernandez covered the back. A female identified as Kenise Bryant answered the door. The suspect, Derrick Nixon, was lying face down on the floor in the living room. While Sgt. Freeman was placing Nixon under arrest, Nixon stated “he came over and was harassing my girl and I shot him.” Nixon was taken into custody without incident.
As CID Hernandez walked toward the house, he heard multiple shots fired and advised dispatch and requested a Code-40 (all call). Hernandez then entered the house and assisted Sgt. Freeman.
Officer Green and Wildlife Officer Nese were walking the street making sure there was no threat. Hernandez then observed Mr. Washington attempting to load Mr. Jenkins into the truck. Hernandez assisted Washington loading Jenkins into the truck Jenkins was transported to the ER.
While Sgt. Freeman was loading Nixon into police vehicle, Nixon commented, “man that dude burned my girlfriends car I tried doing it the right way letting the folks handle it.” Nixon was then placed in the police unit. Hernandez advised Nixon of his Miranda Rights, and he stated he understood his rights.
Bryant retrieved a .22 caliber handgun and Nixon stated that it was the gun he used.
The scene was turned over to CID Hernandez.
While the scene was being watched by Sgt. Freeman and Chief Keith Finch, Officer Green transported Mr. Nixon to City Jail. While being transported Mr. Nixon began talking about the incident. Officer Green advised Mr. Nixon to wait and talk with the investigator but he continued. The audio in Officer Green's patrol vehicle has been obtained.
At approximately 12:00 AM, CID Hernandez went to the ER to get more information and met with Mr. Washington. Hernandez advised dispatch to contact State Police.
During this time, Kenise Bryant was inside the house getting clothes for her and her seven kids. Once back at the scene, Hernandez asked Bryant where the shooting started and a female juvenile stated that “he (Nixon) stared shooting at the porch and ran that way (pointed at the parking lot) then he ran that way and started shooting (pointing towards the street) and then he ran inside the house.”
At the hospital, Washington stated that he was checked into the ER because he was hit. Washington had an apparent bullet wound to the left buttocks area. Washington advised that Nixon pointed the gun at him and shot three times.
Washington was later seen and later released from the hospital.
Jenkins body was processed by Arkansas State Police and Desha County Corner Billy Bates. Mr. Jenkins was pronounced deceased at 3:15 AM.
Nixon was booked on the charges of First Degree Murder, First Degree Battery and Possession of Firearms by Certain Persons.
