Fence on Fire at First Baptist Church
Dumas Police Officer Tonianne Wernicke was paroling on College Street in front of First Baptist Church Monday, January 18, 2021 at approximately 2:57 PM when she observed smoke coming from the fence on the right side front of the church.
Jason Smith and Tucker Tatum were attempting to put out the remains of a small fire. Smith stated he drove past moments before Officer Wernicke arrived and saw the smoke. Smith turned around and doused the flames water bottles he kept in his truck. Tatum saw Smith and stopped to help him.
Three wood planks and one post were damaged on the fence but the fire was extinguished before any more damage was done.
Officer Wernicke looked back on security footage from the church. At 2:37 PM, two unknown black males walked across the parking lot and stopped at the corner where the fire started. They stood thee for second and then walked west on Waterman past the church.
One male had on a black jacket and black pants, while the other male had on a black jacket and white pants.
Officer Martin stated she saw the males before this incident. This incident is currently under investigation.
