Delta Memorial Hospital hosted the Medical Application for Science and Health program for high school students wanting to be in the medical field.
MASH is funded by UAMS and Farm Bureau and is a free one week learning experience for the high school medical student. This year’s MASH program is taught by Sarah Blevins and Tyler Hogan who said they have enjoyed this group of students. Chief Nursing Officer of the Dumas MASH program is Dana Miles.
Every year there are applications that are sent out to surrounding schools, and most hospitals in Arkansas host their own MASH program.
This year has been their second year back after COVID stopped the program for two years in 2020 and 2021. Blevins says she wants students to learn from the ‘behind the scenes’ environment of the medical field. “I just want something for them to take away, If they find something that they’re passionate about- knowing the steps they need to take going forward in order to achieve their passion,” says Blevins. The MASH program builds up the students' resume, and after completing the course each student leaves with a certificate.
Participating students include Shakiya Edwards, Winter Manues, Katie Henson, Dylan Vaca, Esmeralda Medina, Mylisha Thomas, and Kamryn Jones all of Dumas High School.
Each student said they have loved and enjoyed the experience, and that they will go into the medical field after completing high school.
