So often save our celebrations and praises for the legacies of community and political leaders until they have passed or when something tragic has happened. This year, for Black History Month 2022, let us together honor a living legacy. There are many people that we could recognizes in this column, but today we reserve it for just one, our own Onie Norman.
In 2017 the Arkansas Times prepared a special edition of its magazine and titled “On the move visionaries pushing Arkansas forward”. Inside, on page 24, Leslie Newell Peacock wrote about our very own Onie Norman calling her “Delta activist”. The full page spread details the wealth of activity but only Norman has used to serve the delta and Arkansas way back from the 1980s When she won the volunteer of the year award from Governor Bill Clinton, right up to the current day. the article outlines the efforts she was taking to bring to light the challenge faced by Winchester and its sewerage system. Today as a result of her perseverance and commitment some $7 million were found and delivered to the benefit of Dumas and Winchester.
The list of projects, organizations and issues that Onie Norman has championed are too numerous to list, but in the light of Black History Month, it is worth noting that she made history by being the first black woman to run for mayor and the county judge. It was not a bid for power, as she says, her actions, “opened doors and minds for people. I did it to show that any African American can do this.”
Dumas is the proud home to a nationally recognized pioneer, community activist, entrepreneur and leader, our very own Onie Norman. Many people have said that, “whether you need some advice on how to deal with the County or City Council, or you are facing a challenge of legal or financial matters, Onie can be relied on to be there as a constant companion and support.” Whether there are concerns with education, health, schools or road and sewage troubles, Ms Onie, as she is affectionately known, is available to guide and advise.
She is fearless in her approach and tireless in the effort she exerts for the Delta in general and Dumas in particular. When one looks back over the decades there is a track record of commitment and love for all citizens that we can all be proud of.
