While Dumas police were on a narcotic raid Sunday afternoon, the police radio call of an armed robbery at Piggly Wiggly supermarket here. Eight hours later the suspect was in custody.
The time was about 3:15 when a black male, wearing a tan pullover with white draw strings pulled a blue steel, short barrel handgun and ordered the cashier out of the way of the cash register, Police Chief Jim Peterson was told.
As the September 19 filing deadline nears, political interest has picked up in city races, and at least on aldermanic race is in prospect.
According to city hall, Don Rash will oppose W. E. (Bud) Adams, who has served as an alderman her for more than 20 years.
About $2,000 in new Christmas Decorations will be purchased for the City of Dumas, and the cultural committee of the Chamber of Commerce selected designs to be bought when the group met Monday afternoon at the Municipal Building.
Dumas Civic Club and Women’s Service League have given $500 each to the project and the City of Dumas has given $500. Other organizations have pledged funds toward the effort.
Committees are working to make the fifth annual Delta Art and Crafts Fair the largest ever.
More than 100 exhibitors have been signed for the event to be held November 7, 8 and 9.
“Serendipity”, the first auction of the Desha County Museum and Dumas Community Theatre, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Walnut Lake Country Club in Pickens and tickets are still on sale for the event, which includes a candlelight dinner.
Playing what head coach A. B. Wood called “the worst half of football Dumas has ever seen” Friday at Watson Chapel, the Bobcats finally came alive defensively and stopped the Wildcats, 10-7, in 8AAA Conference game.
The victory, giving Dumas a 1-0 league mark and a 2-0 record overall , dropped Watson Chapel to 0-2 on the year and 0-1 in 8AAA play, also spoiling the hosts’ first game in their new stadium.
