35 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK - From the files of the January 2, 1985, Dumas Clarion:
On his last day in office after 16 years as Desha County Judge, Bonnie Zook of McGehee had all the county’s road equipment brought in to the county road department and lined up for County Judge-elect Baine Poole to inspect.
Zook also introduced poole to the road department personnel before making a final official trip to his office at the court house in Arkansas City.
Reed Reunioners held a holiday tea last Wednesday to honor Dr. Mazo Price, home from his research in Africa to visit his mother, Mrs. Algie Price and other relatives.
The Dumas Bobcats, called “lethargic” by their coach after a 53-43 Thursday night loss against the Hamburg Lions, came back Friday against Dermott looking like they “were sort of embarrassed from the night before” and drubbed the Rams, 62-53, to finish the Dumas Holiday Classic.
Hamburg came out of the double header as the only two time winner, shading previously-unbeaten Wabbeaseka-Tucker by 57-53 in Friday’s first game.
The year 1984 arrived and departed without an appearance of “Big Brother” - at least in Arkansas and the rest of the United States- but it had it’s moments.
The biggest story saw Dumas’ industrial picture clouded at the end of the year with Sunbeam’s announcement of departure, then cleared almost a year later as Hussman Corporation signed a lease for the vacated building, with a promise of many “new” jobs and plans for expansion.
