Hamsters, rabbits, horses and chickens…All of these creatures can help your youngsters eat healthier or move more.
DePaul Community Health Centers and the Dumas Public Library are working together this summer to help children in our community think about making healthy food and activity choices.
Tails and Tales, the Library’s Summer Reading Program Theme features books and activities about animals. Some animals - horses, rabbits, chickens and hamsters, for example- love fruits and vegetables.
As you and your child are reading about animals this summer, do a Google search to find out what fruit and vegetable the animals eat.
Make it a challenge for everyone in the house to eat more of that fruit or veggie in the week ahead.
Or try jumping like a rabbit, galloping like a horse or running like a hamster.
When your child sees you and his/her favorite animal practicing healthy habits, they are more likely to follow along.
Visit the Dumas Public Library where an animal trail will lead you right up to the front window display showing ways to move like favorite animals.
Inside the doors, the librarians can help you pick some terrific animal books.
Here’s a tasty rabbit food salad:
Hoppin’ Pear Salad
2 cups shredded lettuce or spinach
4 pear halves, fresh or canned
½ cup cottage cheese
8 pieces sliced almonds
12 raisins
Place about ½ cup shredded lettuce on each plate. Put 1 pear half on the lettuce, cut side facing down. On the narrower end of each pear, make a rabbit face by doing this- poke 2 pieces of sliced almonds into the pear to make ears. Arrange 2 raisins for eyes and 1 for the nose. Place 2 Tablespoons of cottage cheese at the opposite end of each pair half to make a tail.
