The Dumas School District locked down their campuses for the safety of the students and the staff around 8 am to around 12 pm. after they were notified of shots fired in the community Thursday, August 31, 2023
The incident did not occur on any school campus, but the district took all precautions with added security to ensure the safety of the students and staff. The Dumas School District locked down their campus for several hours. The district worked with the Dumas Police Department, who advised the schools that it was safe to lift the lockdown around 12 pm. The DSD kept the parents and communities advised of the situation through Facebook and the district Thrillshare app when the lock down began and when it was lifted. They thanked the Dumas Police Department, Desha County Sheriff Depart-ment and the district School Resource office for keeping the schools safe.
The Dumas Police Department reported on their Facebook page addressing incorrect information about an active shooting incident in the Dumas School District.
“Despite claims to the contrary, there was not an active school shooting incident in the Dumas
School District. Dumas schools were placed on lockdown during a shooting incident in the area to ensure the safety of the students and staff. Officers will be on campus during school dismissal.”
