Levee Fest 2000 is set for this weekend on Front Street on the Mississippi River levee in Arkansas City is the highlight of the Desha County seat’s annual Founder’s Day Celebration.
Main Street Dumas has awarded three minigrants for $1,000 each to be matched on equal basis for improvements to the three downtown buildings: Meador Pharmacy, Wolff Bros., and the Tanenbaum Theatre.
Seventy years after the people of Dumas built a concrete slab with a marker to honor the gravesite of the city’s founder, an effort is underway to replace the broken memorial marking the resting place of William B. Dumas.
Research has shown that the site, in front of Gill Gym, is not only the grave of Mr. Dumas but also of his son, Arthur.
Although the nationwide emergency appeal for blood ended with the passing of Labor Day Weekend, the American Red Cross Blood-mobile visit to Dumas next week is still critical to blood supplies.

Arkansas rice producers are voting this week on Act 725, which would put into effect legislation as a means of collecting funds for rice promotion and rice research, replacing the current voluntary method of collection with a 2 cents per bushel checkoff collected at the first point of sale for all Arkansas rice.
Dwight Smith, a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District, was in Dumas Wednesday to talk with area residents about flooding problems along Canal 19 and its lateral canals. ...
Dug in the 1920s and reconstructed and en-larged in the 1950s to hold runoff water from Southeast Arkansas farmland after heavy rains, it can no longer hold the runoff.
A group of community leaders and elected officials from Desha and Chicot counties visited the Yellow Bend Port site on the Mississippi River, including Mayor Jessie Margaret Free, State Rep. Charlotte Tillar Schexnayder and Tommy Shea of Dumas, Bill Teeter of Jefferson and I.R. Buchannan of Arkansas City.
