What’s it like for a Club kid? I’m glad you asked! It’s summer right now, so I’m usually there all day. My mom drops me off in the morning on her way to work, which means I have to get up early, but that’s ok. I get to see all my friends! When I get to the Club, Ms. Michelle always says “Hi!” when she lets me in the door, and Ms. McKinley gives me breakfast. After I get done eating, my friends and I usually spend some time doing a bunch of different things. Sometimes I go to the music room, because I love to sing and dance. But sometimes, when Ms. Debra is there, I’ll go to Zumba instead. When I don’t feel like singing or dancing, the Green Room is my favorite place to just hang out and read a book. The Purple Room is where the computer lab is, and my friends love going in there to play computer games, too.
Everybody starts to get hungry again, and we get ready for lunch. After lunch, we all go into the gym and have a pep rally when it’s not too hot. On really hot days, we stay in the game room to get ready for the afternoon. That’s when the staff tells us about all the things we’re doing in our rotations that day.
Afternoons are so much fun! I get to paint, draw, and make things when we go to art, and I can get to do science experiments in the STEM lab. The other day, we had a guest speaker come and teach us how to tie a tie! I didn’t know I could do that! My favorite rotations are always the gym and the game room, though. When we go to the gym, I get to play basketball and dodgeball. But only for a little while, because it’s so hot. We don’t ever get to stay in the gym long enough, though. Mr. Ivan says it’s because it’s hot and we need to cool off.
I came to the Boys & Girls Club last summer, too, but it was different. Not as many of my friends came then. And this year, before we go home, we get to eat dinner, too, if we want it. Sometimes I like it, and sometimes I don’t. This summer has been super fun, though. My favorite thing is when we get to go to the library or on field trips. We’re going to the Nature Center in Pine Bluff soon. I wish all my friends were here. I’m going to ask them to come with me when school starts.
