Governor’s Proclamation
Rodney Slater (far left), a special assistant in the governor’s office, presented the proclamation naming July 5-6 “Reed Elementary School Reunion Homecoming Weekend” to Hattie Watts (seated) at the climax of the weekend Sunday. The 4th Golden Reed Reunion Homecoming ended with a worship service at Mt. Moriah M. B. Church with a sermon by Rev. Major Whitten of Tacoma, Wash., and certificates of appreciation for reunion members who participated in the program. Pictured with Slater and Watts, founder and general chair person of the reunion, are (from left) Prof. Sidney Burns, Ervin Holmes, Mary Johnson, Essie Walton, Marvell Branch, Gertrude Jones, and Rev. Major Whitten. The gubernatorial proclamation cite the late Prof. A. L. Reed as a “prominent educator and community leader (who) stood as a corner stone of educational excellence in the city of Dumas, Desha County and throughout the State of Arkansas for 50 years.”
