The Dumas Bobcats, under the leadership of Head Coach George Shelton and his staff, open the 2020-2021 football season hosting the Dollarway Cardinals Friday, August 28 with kickoff set for 7 PM. With the current Hurricane Laura headed inland, coming our way, Dumas will likely open the season on a rain drenched field.
The Bobcats will likely run a spread offense, though they could line up at times in the Wishbone. Opposing teams have no idea what Dumas will do under Coach Shelton, who is determined to right the ship after the Bobcats posted a 1-9 record last year and were picked to finish the 8-4A in sixth place by Hootens Football Magazine.
Coach Shelton has had an extremely successful career coaching High School Football, both as an assistant coach and head coach. With the athletes available in the Dumas School District, be looking for big things in the future on the football field.
Much more on the Bobcats as the season progresses.
The 6-3A Dollarway Cardinals, picked to finish 4th in their conference, are coming off a third place, 6-6 season that saw the Cardinals knock off Jessieville 42-19 in the first round of the playoffs, before falling to Prescott in the second round 23-22. Coach Martese Henry has six starters returning on each side of the ball. The Cardinals run a Multiple I offense and line up in a 4-3 on defense.
Coach Henry installed quarterback packages in the spring for senior Jessiah Grigsby (5-9, 165), Prince Okojie (6-3, 215) and Travelle Lee (6-1, 165) Grigsby is the fastest Cardinal (4.5 speed). He executed zone read concepts in May. Okojie is the most polished passer and usually comes on when the Cardinals go into the shotgun formation with five-wide receiver sets. Lee earned the starting QB job last year, however he missed most of the year with a broken collarbone.
Senior tailback Cameron Henderson (5-10, 195) ran for 636 yards and scored eight touchdowns in 2019. Senior Cherondric Broyles (5-10, 210) is a punishing fullback who shifts to tailback in short yardage situations.
The defense is led by senior tackle Lamarious Douglas (6-0, 265) who is hard to block. Douglas bench presses 300 pounds and will likely earn all-conference honors this year.
The Cardinals strength is good size, experienced quarterbacks with solid recievers, while their weakness could be a lack of team strength and a young offensive line.
