The Arkansas Black Mayors Association presented the Watershed-Improvement Project held during a community meeting at the Dumas Community Center July 12.
The ABAMA encouraged residents of Dumas attending to tell their story on the constant flooding of neighborhoods in the city. ABMA Vice President and Eudora’s Mayor, Tomeka Butler gave the opening remarks. Butler explained what ABMA is and the reason they are here in Dumas. Arkansas Black Mayors Association is a group of progressive minds that represent the interests of black mayors and black municipalities in the state of Arkansas. According to their website, their mission is to promote economic development, community revitalization, and political advocacy to enhance the quality of life for citizens living in black municipalities.
The project scope was led by the lead consultant, Kenneth Lee who explained the reason the project is in Dumas. “This project is to help you, you may have had a yard flooded, you may have had streets flooded, you may have ditches that have not been drained,” said Lee. Lee also said their purpose is to make sure the flooding in Dumas is addressed, because floods in Dumas are more than common. ABMA gave out surveys to properly map out where flooding happens. It was constantly encouraged that residents must do their part to let the members of ABMA know what goes on in their area during a flood. If civil effort is not imposed, then the Watershed-Improvement Project will not succeed, because they are in need of residential help to know where flooding takes place.
