Ernest Otto Hopmann Jr. was born on February 27, 1932 in Brenham, Texas to Ernest O. Hopmann Sr. and Laura Schultze Hopmann. The family then moved to Houston that same year. Ernest graduated from John Reagan High School in Houston, Texas in May 1950, and married Rosemary Robertson on February 23, 1951.
