The people of Dumas received a moment to get a treat and have a small sense of normal life when carnival food stands set up in the Matthews parking lot October 21- 24 .
Debbie Wells, of Malvern and her family set up their three stands selling anything from corn dogs, funnel cakes, cotton candy, turkey legs, caramel apples and other carnival favorites.
“Just about anything you'd see at the fair that is what we bring is fair food and that way we don't compete with anybody in town and it's turned out good we've had very good response to it,” Debbie Wells said. “We can control it we have our social distancing signs and we have our markers you stay 6-feet back and you know the mask and gloves and so it can be controlled, but it still can feel like the fair's in town.”
Wells and her crew began to serving up carnival eats when Chambers of Commerce and other organizations as them to come to their locations. After receiving a good response, they continued doing it on their own. They have visited all around Southeast Arkansas from DeWitt, McGehee, Monticello, Hamburg, Helena and other locations. They usually travel with a fair, but with COVID-19 restrictions the rides are not allowed to operate. The last time, the carnival was in Dumas was in March when the virus hit and shortened their two week 4-5 days early.
“Its been outstanding, We've been treated well every place we've been and everybody loves it. They've asked us to all come back or stay or don't leave” she said. “We're just glad to be able to do what we're doing so we can make a living just like anybody else. We are glad people get excited when we come to town. It makes us feel good that their excited that we're here.”
Well said she appreciates everyone coming out and welcoming them all here. She hopes they enjoyed it and they enjoyed them.
“We like to thank them for supporting us all. It's been a rough, when you've been going from every week to not doing nothing it kind of throws everything in perspective,” she said.
